Play Therapy FAQs

Frequently asked questions about play therapy for children

How long are the sessions?

Play therapy sessions are one hour in length and typically short-term, scheduled on a weekly basis, over 8-12 weeks.

Can we meet with you person?

I understand the desire for in-person meetings, but I have chosen to conduct all my sessions online. This approach began in 2020 due to the circumstances at that time, and I’ve discovered numerous benefits that come with virtual interactions.

One of the advantages is, of course, convenience. Families can join from the comfort of their own homes without worrying about traffic or scheduling conflicts. Many families who work with me appreciate this flexibility and find it easier to integrate our sessions into their daily lives.

Additionally, meeting online allows children to engage in activities within their familiar environment. This setting not only helps them feel more comfortable but also enables us to practice skills and strategies right where they are meant to be applied—at home!

Families have also reported faster results from these home-based virtual sessions, as they can immediately implement what we discuss during our meetings into their daily routines. This immediate application often leads to quicker progress and better outcomes.

Are the sessions covered by insurance plans?

Yes, all sessions are covered by extended health insurance plans. I am also an authorized NIHB provider for Registered First Nation and Inuit families.

What issues can play therapy address?

Play therapy can be effective for children dealing with a wide range of issues, including: behavioral problems, emotional challenges, social difficulties, life transitions and more.

What role does a parent play in play therapy?

In play therapy, a parent’s role is crucial in supporting their child’s therapeutic process. Parents are both particpants and observers. They are also collaborators with the therapist to set goals for the therapy, provide background information about the child’s history, and discuss any changes or challenges at home.

Parents also reinforce the techniques at home, as well as a providing emotional support and encouragement. By being actively involved, parents help create a more comprehensive and supportive environment that extends beyond the therapy room, enhancing the therapeutic process and outcomes for the child.
